Our History

maximios / Religion /

  • 1911 – J. K. Mullen, a prominent citizen of Denver, and his wife, Catherine Smith, offer to finance a home for the elderly poor:

“My wife came over the Plains from the Missouri River, a distance of nearly 700 miles, with her brother who drove his own team … I came shortly thereafter, and we felt as though we wanted, before we passed away, to leave something in the nature of a memorial …for the benefit of the aged.” —- J. K. Mullen

  • Bishop Matz, of Denver, receives approval from Mother Germaine, Provincial Administrator, Little Sisters of the Poor, to establish a home for the elderly poor in Denver.
  • 1916 – Construction of a four-story brick home begins on a ten-acre tract of land on West 29th Avenue.
  • 1917 – In December, the Little Sisters of the Poor arrive in Denver.
  • 1918 – Little Sisters of the Poor welcome their first elderly Resident to the Mullen Home on March 28.
  • 1975 – Two new wings are added to the existing building to provide a continuum of services: assisted living and intermediate nursing care. Groundbreaking ceremonies include many J. K. Mullen descendants.
  • 1980 – Part of the old building is converted into apartments for low-income elderly.
  • 2007 – Mullen Home celebrates 90 years of service.

From considerably small and humble beginnings, the Little Sisters of the Poor follow the example of our foundress, Saint Jeanne Jugan, and provide a loving home-like atmosphere where our Residents can live out their days in peace and comfort. Our mission today is the same as it was in 1918—to serve needy elderly men and women of Colorado.

Admission to Mullen Home

maximios / Religion /

We understand how difficult it can be to place a family member in a long-term care facility. The process and procedures can be daunting at times. Here at Mullen Home, it is our goal to make this process as effortless and comfortable as possible.

Considerations for the prospective Resident:

  • Age and financial eligibility;
  • Current living situation;
  • Current needs, abilities, and health concerns;
  • Expectations of the applicant and family members.

Guidelines and process for the prospective Resident:

  • Must be 60 years of age or older; all religions welcome;
  • Assisted living and nursing facility applicants must already be receiving Medicaid benefits;
  • Apartment Residents must be of low income and completely independent in self care.

If you would like more information regarding the admissions process and the availability of rooms and services, please contact the Director of Social Services at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Our Philosophy

maximios / Religion /

As Little Sisters of the Poor, our mission is to care for the elderly poor in the spirit of humble service which we have received from our foundress, Saint Jeanne Jugan.  We welcome the elderly as we would Jesus Christ Himself, and serve them with love and respect until death.

Comfort …  Dignity … and Compassionate Care

  • We care for low-income elderly, regardless of race or religion
  • We serve the Residents by acknowledging their needs and  treating them with respect
  • We help them feel loved and useful
  • We strive to have them feel like part of “the family” while respecting their freedom and privacy
  • We provide our Residents with secure surroundings
  • We engage our Residents with meaningful activities to enhance their health and well being
  • We provide for their spiritual needs by offering a daily Mass and rosary;  clergy and ministers from other faiths are welcome
  • We reject all forms of euthanasia and assisted suicide and protect our Residents from these practices
  • We are with them in their sickness and they are never left alone in their process of dying

We extend an open invitation to anyone wanting to tour our Home and experience the warmth and graciousness of our Residents and our “Little Sister” hospitality.  Please call 303-433-7221 for further information.

Vocation Discernment

maximios / Religion /

Interested young women gather for a special “Day for Consecrated Life” with the Little Sisters at Mullen Home.

Are you a single young woman who loves the Lord deeply?  Who feels drawn to give yourself for the sake of His Kingdom?  If so, God may be calling you to the consecrated religious life…and the Little Sisters of the Poor would be happy to talk with you and accompany you in your discernment.

“…Allow yourselves to be asked by Christ: ‘What do you want to do with your lives?’  May those among you who feel the call to follow Him in the priesthood or in consecrated life reply to the Lord’s call and put yourselves totally at the service of the Church, with a life completely

dedicated to the Kingdom of heaven.  You will never be disappointed.”

– Pope Benedict XVI, Vatican City, April 28, 2008

What should I do?  How do I know if I am called?

  • Pray to know God’s will for your life; spend quiet time in His presence.
  • Arrange to come for Mass and an acquaintance visit with our religious family and those we serve.
  • Volunteer some of your time with us in our apostolate.  Whatever gifts you have, they can be used in God’s service. Check out our live-in volunteer program here.
  • Check out one of our upcoming vocation discernment opportunities. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for dates and location.

Blog

maximios / Religion /

Written by Wendy Macagno, Volunteer Coordinator

On Cinco de Mayo we celebrated our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on a warm evening on the Activity Patio. Las Delicias, a local restaurant in the area, graciously donated all of the delicious food. With colorful decorations adorning the tables and trees and a table of delights, it was a perfect recipe for a great time. Mother Mary Thomas personally thanked the volunteers on behalf of the Little Sisters, and gave door prizes to all those who attended, giving special recognition to those who gave more than 100 hours of service last year. To bring a little cheer of the Little Sisters to their own homes, they were given flower pots with colorful pansies donated from Home Depot. One guest commented that,“It was nice meeting other volunteers,” especially since many of them have never met since they come in at different times. It was also a final opportunity to say good bye to Mother Mary Thomas, who is being transferred to Saint Paul, Minnesota.

With over 100 active volunteers that have donated a total of 7,000+ hours in 2011 alone, they have generously given of their time to everything from meal service, folding laundry, to assisting the activity department with their events and projects. Without their hard work and donated time, we would not be where we are today!

Association Jeanne Jugan

maximios / Religion /

Approved by the Church in 1998, the Association of Saint Jeanne Jugan follows the path of “newness and hope” encouraged by Pope John Paul II. St. Jeanne Jugan envisioned hospitality as a humble, fraternal service uniting in one family who wish to serve Jesus Christ in the person of their elderly brothers and sisters.

Providing a valuable and welcome support… forms of service are diverse and include:

  • tasks of hospitality
  • strengthening pastoral activities
  • assisting in recreational events

Catholic men and women, eighteen years and older, seeking a greater vitality to deepen their faith are invited to participate. New members are inducted into the Association in May of each year.
